Mercury Prize 2004 Show 184 images Created 11 May 2012
John Marshall and his JM Enternational team were official photographers at the 2004 Barclaycard Mercury Prize Album of the Year, 7 September 2004.
The award ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House hotel, Park Lane London. The ceremony was presented by Jools Holland.
Franz Ferdinand kicked off the show with a suitably rousing rendition of 'Take Me Out', and ended the evening by winning the overall Prize.
In between it was a night of contrasting musical styles, reflecting the diversity of the shortlist. Fellow Glaswegians Belle and Sebastian delighted all in attendance with their performance of 'I'm A Cuckoo'. Ty reminded everyone of the good health of British hip-hop with his jazzy rendition of 'Look 4 Me'. Jamelia sung a moving version of 'Thank You', Basement Jaxx rocked the house with 'Good Luck', and there were also great performances from the hugely enjoyable Zutons and the refreshingly inimitable Amy Winehouse. Perhaps the biggest cheer of the evening however was saved for Robert Wyatt who received his shortlist trophy from long-time friend and musical collaborator Brian Eno, and then proceeded to give one of the great acceptance speeches, by turns emotional, funny and thoughtful.
