The Music Managers Forum (MMF) Roll of Honour Awards 2007, held at London’s Hilton Hotel, celebrated the achievements of key figures in the music industry. The gala saw notable executives being recognized for their contributions to music management and production.
Hot record producer Mark Ronson, a New York City-based Brit, was named Producer of the Year. Ronson’s production expertise is evident in a series of recent chart-topping successes, including Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black” (Island) album and Lily Allen’s “Alright, Still” (Regal). He has also worked with Christina Aguilera and Robbie Williams. Ronson’s own album, “Version” (Columbia), features three tracks currently in the top 75 of the Official U.K. Singles Chart. His soul-tinged cover of the Smiths’ track “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” is currently No. 2 in Britain and has moved 21-11 on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles. Melbourne-born singer Daniel Merriweather, who performs vocals on the single, presented Ronson with his award, declaring Ronson as “the future for music.”
Twenty-First Artists’ Todd Interland was named Manager of the Year. Interland, who has guided the careers of Elton John and James Blunt, received one of the night’s biggest cheers when he stated, “the U.K. record business is the best in the world.” Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw received the International Manager Award, while The Who’s manager Bill Curbishley was honoured with the prestigious “Peter Grant” Award, named in recognition of the late Led Zeppelin manager’s outstanding achievement.
The warmest applause of the night was for Peter and Sumi Jenner, the management team behind Pink Floyd and Billy Bragg, who were inducted into the Roll of Honour. Billy Bragg highlighted the significant impact a manager can have on an artist, stating, “I was lucky because mine was a radical.” Additionally, BBC TV producer Mark Cooper, known for “Later With Jools Holland,” was inducted into the Roll of Honour.
This year’s ceremony introduced a new association with sponsor TixDaq, a company that provides analysis of the secondary ticketing market, including a weekly chart of the top-grossing tickets. The event’s iconic moments were captured by official photographer John Marshall of JM Enternational.
