Richard Griffiths and Harry Magee, co-founders of Modest! Management, were jointly awarded the 2019 Music Industry Trusts Award (MITS) at a star-studded ceremony in London. The event, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, saw the UK and international music industry’s elite pay tribute to the influential duo. Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Peter Mensch of Q Prime presented the award.
Griffiths and Magee have each spearheaded the careers of many artists over four decades. Modest!’s current roster includes Niall Horan, Little Mix, Olly Murs, 5 Seconds of Summer, Katherine Jenkins, Alison Moyet, and the Spice Girls. One Direction, despite being on hiatus, remains one of their notable clients.
Formed in 2003, Modest! Management achieved unprecedented success with One Direction, who sold over 75 million albums and played worldwide sell-out stadium tours. In 2014, One Direction grossed $282.2 million in ticket sales, topping Pollstar’s Top 20 Worldwide Tours report. They came in second in 2015, selling more tickets than any other artist that year.
Niall Horan congratulated his managers, saying, “With Richard Griffiths and Harry Magee, I struggle to know where to even start. They’ve worked their arses off for me and I can put it all down to the kind of relationship I share with them. They are like my uncles. I’d do anything for these men and I can comfortably say that they would do the same for me.”
Olly Murs added, “Richard and Harry, you are more than just managers to me. For the last 10 years, we’ve talked more about football than music. Anyone that knows you guys knows how hard you both work, and I can’t think of two more deserving people for this award.”
Magee expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is indeed a great honour for Richard and I to be given the MITS Award and to highlight two exceptional charities, The BRIT Trust and Nordoff Robbins!”
Griffiths added, “It is such an honour to receive this amazing award together with my great friend and partner Harry Magee. To help raise money for these two wonderful charities is a privilege.”
Griffiths and Magee follow last year’s honouree, Emma Banks, joining the ranks of Rob Stringer, Sir Lucian Grainge, Ahmet Ertegun, Michael Eavis CBE, and Roger Daltrey CBE. The MITS Award supports The BRIT Trust and Nordoff Robbins and is sponsored by PPL, SJM Concerts, and Spotify.
