Jonathan Ross Honoured with 2009 Music Industry Trusts Award
Jonathan Ross, the British TV chat show host, was honoured with the 2009 Music Industry Trusts Award (MITS) at a ceremony in London. The award, presented by George Michael, recognized Ross’s contributions to music broadcasting over his three-decade career.
The event featured video tributes from celebrities, including Will Smith, U2, Sir Tom Jones, and Cheryl Cole. Will Smith, a frequent guest on Ross’s show, noted, “You are important to me and to my life. This is a very prestigious award.”
Award organisers highlighted Ross’s role in providing exposure for new bands since his first chat show, The Last Resort, in the 1980s. David Munns, Chairman of the Award committee, stated, “For over two decades, Jonathan Ross has been an important part of the UK music landscape and has provided valuable support to artists in challenging times. His passion for music, enthusiasm for discovering and encouraging musicians, and the importance of his two shows for artist development make Jonathan Ross a worthy recipient of the 2009 MITS Award.”
Ross called the honour “an incredible honour” from an industry he had “always loved.” The ceremony included a tribute film featuring messages from George Michael and other luminaries who praised Ross for his contributions to music and broadcasting.
George Michael, while presenting the award, emphasized Ross’s influence, stating, “Jonathan has always been a great supporter of music and musicians, providing a platform for artists to reach wider audiences.”
The event also raised funds for the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy charity and The BRIT Trust, which includes the BRIT School for performing arts and technology. The Music Industry Trusts Award, now in its 18th year, continues to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the music industry.
Jonathan Ross joins a list of previous MITS recipients, including Sir Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Sir George Martin, Peter Gabriel, and Sir Michael Parkinson. His recognition with the MITS Award underscores his role in the music industry and his support for artists over the years.
