The Ivor Novello Awards, named after entertainer Ivor Novello, have been presented annually in London by the Ivors Academy since 1956. Amy Winehouse has been nominated for three Ivor Novello Awards, known as the Oscars of British songwriting. Last year, she won Best Contemporary Song for her hit “Rehab.” This year, “Rehab” is nominated for Best-Selling British Song, while “Love is a Losing Game” and “You Know I’m No Good” are both nominated for Best Song Musically and Lyrically, marking the first time a singer has been nominated twice in this category in the same year since the awards began in 1955.
The Album Award went to “In Rainbows,” written by Colin Greenwood, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O’Brien, Philip Selway, and Thom Yorke, and performed by Radiohead. The Best Contemporary Song award was given to “People Help the People,” written by Simon Aldred and performed by Cherry Ghost. The Best Original Film Score was awarded to “Atonement,” composed by Dario Marianelli. The Best Song Musically and Lyrically was “Love Is a Losing Game,” written and performed by Amy Winehouse.
The Best Selling British Song was “Beautiful Liar,” written by Ian Dench, Mikkel Eriksen, Amanda Ghost, Tor Erik Hermansen, and Beyoncé Knowles, and performed by Beyoncé and Shakira. The Best Television Soundtrack award went to “Oliver Twist,” composed by Martin Phipps. Phil Collins received the International Achievement award, while David Gilmour was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award. Gabrielle received the award for Outstanding Song Collection.
Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook were recognised with the PRS Outstanding Contribution to British Music award. The PRS Most Performed Work award went to “Shine,” written by Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen, and Stephen Robson, and performed by Take That. Mika was named Songwriter of the Year. Jonathan Dove received The Ivors Classical Music Award, while Jazzie B was honoured with The Ivors Inspiration Award.
