On 31 October 2005, Sir Michael Parkinson, the renowned British broadcaster and journalist, was honoured with the prestigious Music Industry Trusts Award (MITS) at a gala ceremony in London. The award, presented by Rod Stewart, recognised Parkinson’s outstanding contributions to the music industry through his illustrious career in broadcasting.
The ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, was attended by many of Parkinson’s peers and admirers, including George Michael. The evening celebrated Parkinson’s influence on the music industry, particularly through his iconic television interviews and his support for musicians over the years.
Rod Stewart, while presenting the award, highlighted Parkinson’s impact on his own career and the industry at large. “Michael has always been a great supporter of music and musicians, giving us a platform to share our stories and our music. It’s an honour to present this award to someone who has done so much for the industry.”
The event featured a heartfelt tribute to Parkinson’s career, showcasing clips from some of his most memorable interviews with music legends. George Michael, who attended the event, spoke about Parkinson’s unique ability to draw out the best in his guests. “Michael has a gift for making you feel comfortable and allowing you to open up. His interviews are not just about the music, but about the people behind the music.”
In his acceptance speech, Parkinson expressed his gratitude and reflected on his career. “I am deeply honoured to receive this award. Music has always been a significant part of my life and my work. I have had the privilege of interviewing some of the greatest musicians of our time, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share their stories with the world.”
The event raised funds for the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy charity and the BRIT Trust, which includes the BRIT School for performing arts and technology.
